In Texas, what else would you do on a cold and drizzly Saturday afternoon after football season is over?- take a 40 minute road trip to get some BBQ of course. Not just any old BBQ but one that is in a league of it' own - the mecca. It's called Kruez (pronounced Kritzes) and they've been doing BBQ for over 100 years. They're a bit particular about the way they do it, the way one buys it (leave your visa at home), and the way one eats it (see the instructions on the picture posted). One of the traditions they have is - no forks. They have spoons for the sides, but the barbecue is intended to be eaten with the bare hand. There are no forks to be found in this restaurant. Although, my buddy Jim tripped over one laying on the ground in the parking lot on our way into the restaurant. I guess it was considered contraband. Good thing Jim, being on his first trip, didn't kindly and mistakenly take the lost fork back, only to be set up for a denied entry to barbecue mecca.
Kruez barbecue is in Lockhart, Texas - about 30 miles southeast of Austin on highway 183. We go there at least once a year when Lockhart's neighboring metropolis, Luling, has it's annual 'Water Melon Thump'.
